I really do not think it is a Gentoo issue. I have run Gentoo on quite a few SMP boxen over the past several years, and never had problems like you describe. Sounds like a hardware issue to me, I don't remember that, but I cannot say for certain that I have tried the 2004.1 universal x86 CD with the SMP kernel.

A friend of mine was complaining about some RH CDs not working - it turned out he'd asked someone else to burn them and they had been done at 32x. Whenever I do a CD that needs to be read in not the drive it was written in (IYSWIM) I do it at 8x. Less for El-Torito. Burnt at an agonising 2x.
